Mac pro 5 1 ram configuration
Have not seen 32GB modules stocked anywhere that include MacPro5,1 compatibility. There's a few off-brand names on Amazon, but prices are too steep for an experiment. Apr 23, 2, The presumption here is that the user installs exactly the amount of memory needed remember, these are server parts. But if the workload requires more memory than is available from the 3 sticks, adding a 4th stick is desirable over hitting swap.
In my observation, 5,1 MPs are somewhat flexible on what is installed. A friend has a dual-socket system with 15 GB installed.
Before I met him I would have bet more than a beer this wouldn't work. A mutual friend recently upgraded to 32 GB, and gave him his 3x4GB. So hope is on the horizon. Reactions: kings Dec 12, 1, UK.
Oct 9, For me, 24GB of Ram whilst leaving a slot open is optimal since I've yet to come close to using it all. Then I decided to re-write my program and split the job. It's less ideal, but at least it did not take forever to complete the jobs. That does not happen often, though. It seems that the 64GB case will give a small speed advantage, based on what people said here, as long as the RAM usage does not exceed 64GB.

You can use Activity Monitor to discover how you are currently using the RAM installed in your Mac and to see if additional memory would be helpful. The and Mac Pros use two different speed ratings of RAM, depending on which processor type is installed. You may ask why you would even consider using slower RAM.
You may continue to use the slower RAM, although I recommend upgrading to faster RAM as soon as possible to get the most out of your processor upgrade. The main difference when installing RAM is the processor.
Ramjet+ Beyond the Apple Specifications
The single-processor models have a processor tray with a single large heat sink and one set of 4 memory slots fig. Dual-processor models have a processor tray with two large heatsinks and 8 memory slots fig. The 8 memory slots are grouped in sets of four; each group is next to its processor. Not all memory slots are created equal. The processors in the Mac Pro each contain three memory channels, which are wired to their memory slots in the following configuration.
Memory Upgrades for Your 2009 - 2012 Mac Pro
Slots 3 and 4, as well as slots 7 and 8, share a memory channel. By not populating the second of the paired memory slots, you allow each memory module to connect to its own dedicated memory channel. If you do choose to populate the last memory slots, you may reduce optimum memory performance, but only when the memory in the shared slots is being accessed. But this official support is based on the size of the RAM modules that were available when the Mac Pro first went on sale. If you choose the 16 GB modules, you can only populate the first three memory slots.
Additionally, you cannot mix modules of different sizes; if you choose to use 16 GB modules, they must all be 16 GB. Notice that in the above configurations, slots 4 and 8 are the last to be populated, ensuring the best overall memory performance. Memory for Mac Pros is available from many third-party sources.
